Recorded by the Brass Band of Columbus; Brian Stevens, Director; on November 24, 2019 at Wesley Ridge Retirement Community in Reynoldsburg, OH.

Russian Christmas Music

Originally written for symphonic/wind band, Alfred Reed’s “Russian Christmas Music” was commissioned for a 1944 concert in Denver aimed at improving relations between the then Soviet Union and the United States. This arrangement for brass band by Dr. David Leppla reduces the overall runtime but preserves the feeling and mood; here, the finale is accompanied by pipe organ, performed by Joshua Brodbeck. Recorded December 1, 2019, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Upper Arlington, OH.

Feed the Birds

This original tune by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman, written for the 1964 film “Mary Poppins,” was the favorite song of none other than Walt Disney himself. Disney considered the lyrics’ message of charity and altruism a metaphor – not just for the movie, but for the entire Disney operation. The tune here has been brilliantly arranged (the introduction includes the sounds of birds and the bells of St. Paul’s Cathedral) by Jonathan Bates, and features BBC soprano player John Montgomery perform on piccolo trumpet. Recorded December 1, 2019 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Upper Arlington, OH.

By Faith Alone By Tony Zilincik

Premiere performance of BBC Assistant Director Tony Zilincik’s new work for brass band. From the composer: “By Faith Alone is a tone poem to celebrate the 500th year of the Reformation. Through music, the work attempts to capture Martin Luther’s devotion to the church, his struggles with the church’s leadership, and his ultimate goal of showing that God’s grace is free, and you receive it through faith alone.” Recorded October 29, 2017 at Ascension Lutheran Church, Columbus, OH.

Overture – The Proclamation of Christmas by Steven Bulla

Composed by Stephen Bulla for the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army, The Proclamation of Christmas is a medley that includes unique takes on several traditional carols, including: “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” “Ding Dong Merrily on High,” “Angels from the Realms of Glory,” “The First Nowell,” “While Shepherds Watched,” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” Recorded December 9, 2018 at Ascension Lutheran Church, Columbus, OH.

Rest by Frank Ticheli

Composer Frank Ticheli’s “Rest” perfectly captures the tone of poet Sara Teasdale’s “There Will Be Rest.” Her words serve as the text for Ticheli’s work: There will be rest, and sure stars shining Over the roof-tops crowned with snow, A reign of rest, serene forgetting, The music of stillness holy and low. I will make this world of my devising Out of a dream in my lonely mind. I shall find the crystal of peace – above me Stars I shall find. Michael Gallehue, Director of the Ohio Valley British Brass Band, scored Ticheli’s work for brass band from the wind band arrangement by Dr. Russel Mikkelson, and dedicated it to Brass Band of Columbus founding member Gary Tirey, who passed away April 1, 2017. BBC Music Director Brian Stevens leads the combined bands during their annual shared concert; recorded May 21, 2017 at The Church at Mill Run, Hilliard, OH.

Mass from La Fiesta By Mexicana H. Owen Reed Arr. Les Susi

La Fiesta Mexicana is a three movement suite for wind band by noted composer H. Owen Reed; the middle movement, the Mass, has been transcribed for brass band by former (and charter) BBC member Les Susi. The mass follows the Prelude and Aztec Dance, which ends dramatically and transitions into the peal of church bells as a call to worship. Following the bells, it’s easy to imagine people making their way toward and into the church, talking quietly amongst themselves, prior to the start of the service – announced loudly by the band before more reflective material and the call of a cantor to end the movement. Recorded December 13, 2015 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus, OH.

Rameau Revisited Arr. Peter Graham

Five selections from the operas and keyboard works of French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) are arranged by Peter Graham in a suite for modern brass band. The two outer movements – Marche, and Tambourin – are display pieces for the full ensemble, while the three inner movements – Rondeau, La Joyeuse. and Danse – showcase the middle, cornet and lower brass sections in turn. Recorded June 21, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Bexley, OH.

(Somewhere) Over the Rainbow Arr. Goff Richards

The band’s own Lisa Galvin is featured on tenor horn in this marvelous Goff Richards arrangement of the song that was almost cut from The Wizard of Oz. Over the Rainbow was the favorite song of Dr. Jon R. Woods, former Director of The Ohio State University Marching Band, who passed away in September, 2015 – the Brass Band of Columbus is honored to perform it in tribute to him. Recorded May 15, 2016 at The Church at Mill Run, Hilliard, OH.

Lincoln Portrait br A.Copland, arr R. Larch

Compared to any other work in the Brass Band of Columbus repertoire, as much (or more) has been written about Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait. The digital age makes it easy to find fascinating examples, including https://www.nytimes.com/books/99/03/1… and http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/enews/2009/… . In this arrangement for brass band, the BBC’s own Joe Galvin recites the words of Abraham Lincoln himself – carefully selected by Copland to pair with his evocative musical backdrop. Recorded at the Chautauqua (NY) Institution amphitheater on July 5, 2015 – in the sesquicentennial year of the end of the Civil War.

National Emblem March

The Brass Band of Columbus has performed E.E. Bagley’s classic National Emblem march – with its signature first strain quotation of the Star Spangled Banner – any number of times. However, the dedication of the Ariel-Foundation Park in Mt. Vernon (OH) marked the first (and likely only) time the BBC has played this piece accompanied by laser light. It was somewhat distracting (including the segment where the stage lights were turned off, temporarily leaving the band in the dark), but – despite issues involving the video camera’s auto-focus confusion – still worth seeing and hearing. Recorded July 4, 2015 at Ariel-Foundation Park in Mt. Vernon, OH.

(Believe Me if All) Those Endearing Young Charms

The traditional Irish tune Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms is arranged for brass band and solo euphonium by Stanley Boddington, and here features our own Scott Heath accompanied by the Brass Band of Columbus. Director Brian Stevens leads the band during opening/dedication ceremonies for the new Ariel-Foundation Park in Mt. Vernon, OH on July 4, 2015.

The tale of the tragic Greek mythological figure Orpheus is told through music in this original, three movement concerto for solo trumpet and brass band composed by Peter Meechan. Following introductory narration, soloist Jens Lindemann opens with a cadenza from the back of the hall to begin the first movement, Journey to the Underworld. Performed May 29, 2015 at the International Trumpet Guild annual conference in Columbus, OH.

Ray Steadman-Allen composed this march in 1995 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Rotary, taking the title Service Above Self from the organization’s motto. Summon the Heroes

Jessica Sneeringer, Director of the Central Ohio Brass Band, leads the combined bands in Summon the Heroes: composer John Williams theme for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and the finale to this year’s Triune Concert Series program. Recorded February 14, 2014 at St. John’s Church, Columbus OH.

Rhapsody for Euphonium and Brass Band

American composer/arranger James Curnow is a good friend of the Brass Band of Columbus; here, in his original work Rhapsody for Euphonium and Brass Band, soloist Diana Herak is featured though on British baritone instead of euphonium (it’s a lovely piece for either). Recorded June 10, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, OH.

Facilita

Scott Heath is featured in Facilita, a theme and variations composed by John Hartmann – originally written as a cornet solo, but it works just as well for solo euphonium. Hartmann himself was an interesting character, serving first in the Prussian military in the mid-1800s before moving to and staying in England, serving in several British military bands and writing solos such as this one. Recorded June 28, 2014 at Gahanna (OH) Creekside as part of the 8th annual Ohio Brass Arts Festival.

Coronation March from “The Prophet”

“The development of the saxhorn family in the 19th century gave great impetus to the development of all-brass bands both in America and in Europe. French composer Giacomo Meyerbeer once called for a full saxhorn brass band on stage during one of his operas, “The Prophet.” The opera premiered in 1849, just at the peak of Adolphe Sax’s influence as an instrument maker. Saxton’s Cornet Band and the Brass Band of Columbus share the stage for the well-known Coronation March from Act IV, Scene Two of “The Prophet,” a grand spectacle at Munster Cathedral. In this arrangement, led by BBC Director Brian Stevens, Saxton’s naturally plays the role of the on-stage band, while the BBC forms the orchestra in the pit.” – adapted from program notes by Dr. Ronald Holz at The Great American Brass Band Festival, Danville, KY on June 8, 2014. For more information about Saxton’s Cornet Band, visit https://saxtonscornetband.com/

The Essence of Time

Composer Peter Graham says his 1989 work The Essence of Time is an interpretation based on Ecclesiastes, chapter 3 which – in the King James version – begins, “To every thing there is a season…” The percussive start signifies “a time to be born,” followed by sections representing times to dance, love, hate, die, mourn, war, and a stirring finale representing a time for peace. BBC Director Brian Stevens programmed this for the band’s 30th Anniversary Celebration Concert to not only represent past contesting success – ten North American Brass Band Association/Championship division titles, including 1995 in Toronto with this very selection – but also due to “time” reflected in the title for this anniversary season. Recorded March 2, 2014 at the Lincoln Theater in Columbus, OH.

Glorifico Aeternum

When offered his choice of selections to lead during the Brass Band of Columbus 30th Anniversary Celebration Concert, former director Tim Jameson opted for Glorifico Aeternum – a staple in the Salvation Army music library since its debut in 2003. Composer Dean Jones writes, “This piece has a central theme that is paramount to the Christian: the opportunity to offer glory and thanksgiving to God, in return for his great love to us that will last throughout eternity.” Recorded March 2, 2014 at the Lincoln Theater in Columbus, OH.

That’s a Plenty

One former Assistant Director of the Brass Band of Columbus, charter member Dr. Eric Aho, leads the band in an arrangement by another: Les Susi. That’s a Plenty, a ragtime/Dixieland standard, is one of more than 30 pieces Susi (also an Emeritus member of the band) arranged for the BBC. Featured: Tony Zilincik (tuba), Micah Abrams (cornet) and Dan Hostetler (set). Recorded March 2, 2014 during the band’s 30th Anniversary Celebration Concert at the Lincoln Theater, Columbus OH.
