David Eaton, Solo CornetDavid Eaton

Adjunct Faculty, Ohio Wesleyan University;
Director, Kokosing Brass Academy

(Charter Member)

Eaton lives in Mount Vernon, Ohio with his wife Pat who is a flutist and an elementary music teacher. They have two married children.

When Katie and Michael were young, their father would take them to Columbus for horn and trumpet lessons with BBC members Ellen Verbsky and Dan King after which the kids would sit in the back of the bandroom at Brookhaven High School and "enjoy" many BBC rehearsals. In spite of such blatant child abuse, Michael is now a member of the cornet section of the BBC and the legacy goes on.

Former Music Educator, Homemaker

Miranda attended OSU where she earned her degree in Music Education. While there, she was a member of OSUMB and Concert Band. She was part of the Concert Band 1987 tour of Japan. Miranda was also a charter member of the Ohio Collegiate Brass.

She was the assistant band director at Whitehall for 14 years. After her daughter was born she gave up teaching to become a domestic goddess. Now she wishes that she had paid more attention in Home Ec class. These days you can find her reading the same story 20 times a day, washing sticky hands ad infinitum, and learning to bake from scratch.

Miranda is married to fellow BBC member Joe Burke. She also performs with the Grove City Community Winds and the OK Syncopators.

Peter Baker, BBC Solo CornetPeter Baker

Physician, Columbus Children's Hospital

(Charter Member)

Pete grew up in Westerville, Ohio and after high school had to make the difficult decision of going into music or starting on the path toward a career in medicine. Although he loved music, he chose to go into medicine. After finishing undergraduate work at Otterbein College and medical school at The Ohio State University, Pete completed residency training at OSU and became a member of the faculty at the OSU College of Medicine.

In 2002, he moved to Columbus Children's Hospital. He has continued to play trumpet/cornet during his years of education and says he felt very fortunate to be invited to join the Brass Band of Columbus in 1984.

Stephanie Smith joined the BBC in 2002 after performing with the Central Ohio Brass Band for more than a decade. She is the Director of Instrumental Music at Teays Valley High School in Ashville.

Stephanie recently moved into a newly constructed home where her "girls" Chloe, Lucy and Gracie allow her to live as long as she continues to provide pet food, toys and daily play time spent in dominant thematic implementations cannot be understated vis-a-vis David Bowie, for instance.

Bill Bailey, BBC Soprano CornetBill Bailey

Materials Planner

Bill (and wife Cindy) have 3 children, 2 birds and 2 very spoiled Papillons.

He has a bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management from OSU and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Franklin University. While at Ohio State, he toured Japan with the Concert Band, visited the World’s Fair with the jazz band, and survived 18,000 script Ohio’s with the OSUMB. Well, survived might be the wrong word. Bill also wandered the corridors of several colleges within OSU, from Music to Astronomy, finally landing on the one not requiring calculus or music theor.

Since 1991, Bill has played the Eb Soprano, clearly demonstrating a lack of intelligence. Funny thing....every year the written notes get higher, and the mouthpiece gets smaller. He also served as the BBC’s Business Manager for two years.
A licensed pilot and SCUBA diver, he spent several rather exciting moments in the Bahamas on a shark feeding dive. His wife still isn’t happy about that one. Bill is a Star Trek nut (original series, of course) and really enjoys Discovery Channel HD. Man vs. Food is another favorite....Should NASA decide to put a Brass Band on the International Space Station, “beam me up”...

Bill is a Materials Planner with Belron US.

(Charter Supporter)

Mike joined the Army Reserves right out of high school, spending his summer at Ft. Lost in the Woods (Leonard Wood) in the state of Misery (Missouri). He attended Cedarville College in the fall of 1997, which was more stringent than the army. Almost being kicked out several times for listening to "offensive music", drawing scantily clad comic book heroines, and sneaking out to smoke cigars in the corn field behind the dorm, he transferred to Mt. Vernon Nazarene College in 1999 to get a degree in Art (and because he missed the locals that sit in their trucks in the bank parking lots drinking Old Milwaukee every Friday night in downtown Mt. Vernon).

After finishing a degree in graphic design and realizing that he hated computers, he started his own painting business (mainly because he had learned the names of the colors in college). He did very well, but decided that this money making thing was not for him, so he went back to school to get another monetarily worthless degree, this time in music.

Mike was married in 2004, has just bought his first house, and has a wife that supports him even though she knows he would make more money bobbing for nickels in a park fountain. The two people he credits the most for his playing sit first and second chair, and he has always dreamed of joining them in the BBC. Now that he is in the BBC, all he does is stare at the back of their heads.  He has listened to the BBC for as long as he can remember, and he will always remember that Dr. Droste would have the band play 76 Trombones as an encore for him on special occasions.....hmmmmm, now he knows why some of the band members want me dead.

In addition to her excellence in the cornet section, Christy now serves as the BBC Band Chairperson - a very significant role for this organization.

She has two sons that keep her on the run, Corey (15), who plays baseball and percussion; and Kyle (12), who plays trombone, piano and soccer.  Her husband, Eric, owns a media production company, UpBeat Recordings.

David Handshue, BBC FlugelDave Handshue

Director of Bands, Hilliard Davidson High School

David is currently Director of Bands at Hilliard Davidson High School. Prior to Hilliard, he taught at Highland Local Schools (Medina county) and Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center (Columbus Public Schools). David is a past President of OMEA District 15.

Dave has played cornet, alto horn and finally flugelhorn in the BBC since joining the band in 1996. Just what is a flugelhorn? Start with a cornet, reshape to look like it's ready to give birth, try to make it sound like an alto horn and hope it's not played loud enough to be heard.

George Zonders, BBC FlugelGeorge Zonders
Flugelhorn

Public Information Specialist, Columbus Department of Public Utilities
a.k.a. "Government Hack"

(Charter Member)

A charter member of the Brass Band of Columbus (though he himself sometimes disputes this), flugelhorn player George Zonders has, at one point or another, sat in most of the band’s cornet and horn chairs.  However, in all fairness, it must be pointed out that he left promptly and without argument when ordered to do so by the people who rightfully occupy those chairs.

The court-negotiated version of George’s patchwork employment history includes stints as a caterer, educator, videographer, tour guide, talking tree, chicken (don’t ask), radio news reporter and – currently – Public Information Specialist with the Columbus Department of Public Utilities.  Fellow BBC members find it oddly appropriate that George’s career now involves communicating issues related to sewage.

Originally from Westerville (where his father remains as part of the federal Witness Protection Program), George currently resides in Grove City with his talented, tolerant daughter Sarah and two guinea pigs named Pete and JubJub.  Despite his advancing years, George remains easily distracted by shiny objects, and – given a choice – still prefers to play with the box rather than with the actual gift.

Ellen Verbsky joined the BBC in the fall of 1989. Having played the tenor horn since 8th grade, she still didn't consider it a "real" instrument until she started playing "real" music on it with BBC. She took a hiatus from the band in 1997 to have some babies and returned in 2007.

Ellen lives in West Liberty, Ohio, with husband Matt and kids Adam, Marshall and Emma. She works for Matt at his veterinary clinic, substitute teaches, and volunteers at Bellefontaine Schools as an accompanist and horn clinician.
